Mountain View, California: Cloud computing is perceived as more energy efficient. Google’s Urs Hoelzle, Senior Vice President for Technical Infrastructure, writes on the company’s official website that a company can see energy savings of 65 to 85 percent from moving their internal hosted IT services — from email to documents to spreadsheets — over to Google Apps.
Google asserts that these findings are consistent with a case study about the US General Services Administration. For example, as a Google Apps client with approximately 17,000 users, GSA reduced server energy consumption by nearly 90 percent and carbon emissions by 85 percent. That totalled to an approximate $285,000 (a 93 percent reduction) in energy cost savings every year.
A diagram from the website would tell how cloud is so energy efficient:
According to a study by the Carbon Disclosure Project, the blog says, by migrating to the cloud, companies with over $1 billion in revenues in the US and Europe could achieve substantial reductions in energy costs and carbon emissions by 2020:
- US companies could save $12.3 billion and up to 85.7 million metric tonnes of CO2
- UK companies would save £1.2 billion and more than 9.2 million metric tonnes of CO2
- French companies could save nearly €700 million and 1.2 million metric tonnes of CO2
