Hyderabad: Three people were killed when police went to rescue a senior doctor, Aftab Qureshi, and came face to face with the kidnappers in Alamdar Chowk area of Hyderabad.
A convoy of Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) went to rescue the doctor—who was kidnapped from Taj Complex, Karachi 20 days ago—and were locked into a fire exchange with the kidnappers, CPLC Chief Ahmed Chinoy said.
Chinoy said the abductors had killed Mr Qureshi before the police officers reached at the scene, and later a cop and a kidnapper were killed after the firing broke out.
Dr Qureshi was a professor and the head of department of neurosurgery in Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUHMS). He was picked up by two armed men when he left his clinic along with his assistant Imdad and another man on May 13.
The kidnappers freed the two men and left the doctor’s car near Patel Park where it was found with the help of tracking system.
The kidnappers demanded a ransom of Rs20 million from his family.
