Nottingham: England won the second Test of the three-match series, beating West Indies by nine wickets on the fourth day on Monday. England is now leading the series 2-0.
England needed 108 runs after the opponents all out on 165 runs. England lost the only wicket of Andrew Strauss (43; c Bravo b Samuels) as Alastair Cook (43 not out) and Jonathan Trott (17 not out) completed the win with almost a day remaining.
At the start of the fourth day West Indies were 61 for 6. Samuels started on 13 not out with West Indies captain Darren Sammy, who made a maiden Test hundred in his side’s first-innings total of 370, AFP reported.
Samuels did his best to stretch the score to 165 before he ran out on 76. Man-of-the-match Tim Bresnan took four for 37 in 17 overs for a Test-best match haul of eight for 141 and James Anderson took four wickets for 43.
“I’ve enjoyed the two Tests. I just want to continue to play like this, continue to improve and contribute to the team,” AFP quoted Bresnan as saying.
West Indian captain Darren Sammy said his team was not learning and something must be done: “I think we have to be more focused, keep working hard and put a higher price on our wickets.”
Strauss was satisfied with his men but said his team could have been more clinical. “We’re obviously delighted to get over the line in this match, it was hard work at times.”
“We got ourselves in positions were we thought we could take the game by the scruff of the neck and we did. It’s been a hard fought win.”
The third Test will start from June 7 at Birmingham.
