Tripoli: Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi, the person convicted of 1988 Lockerbie bombing, died at his home in Libya at the age of 60.
Megrahi’s health had been deteriorating fast as he was battling with cancer, Reuters quoted his brother Abdulhakim as saying.
In 2011, Megrahi was convicted of the bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 when it was en route to London for New York. A total of 270 people died—259 on plane and 11 on ground were killed in the incident.
It was a day to remember the 270 victims of “an appalling terrorist act”, BBC quoted UK Prime Minister David Cameron as saying.
Alex Salmond, Scottish first minister, also seconded Cameron, saying the death was an occasion to remember Lockerbie victims.
Megrahi was released from prison in 2009 on compassionate grounds from a Scottish prison after a doctor said he had only a few months to live.
Megrahi, a Libyan intelligence officer, always denied any responsibility for the bombing.
