Kuwait City: Kuwait’s appeal courts seconded the lower court decision, upholding a ten-year jail sentence for a person found guilty of insulting Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, ruler of Gulf state, and inciting hatred against him using social media, AFP reported.
The court ruled that Orance al-Rasheedi, the accused, spread rumours about Kuwait undermining its image in a video uploaded on YouTube.
Despite the fact that Kuwait’s constitution protected the state’s emir of being criticised, it said, al-Rasheedi insulted him using social media.
However, the verdict can still be challenged in the country’s supreme court.
The country has been taking strict actions against social media activists for the past several months, AFP said.
