Abuja: At least two people were killed when militants belonged to a radical Islamist sect attacked a northeast Nigeria market, media reported on Wednesday.
According to reports the attack happened in the city of Maiduguri, where the sect known as Boko Haram once had its main mosque.
Witnesses said that the gunmen came into the market and shot two traders dead before fleeing while firing wildly into the air.
The witnesses requested anonymity out of fear of angering the military or the sect.
Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, a military spokesman, blamed the attack on Boko Haram and said that the soldiers later killed one suspected sect member and arrested two others who carried out an attack on a military post.
