Madrid: Real Madrid won its 32nd Spanish league title on Wednesday after having defeated Athletic Bilbao 3-0. It was their first win in four years.
Real’s Gonzalo Higuain and Mesut Ozil gave an early edge to the winner by scoring one after the other in the 16th and 20th minutes respectively. In the 50th minute Cristiano Ronaldo added insult to Athletic’s injury, scoring the game’s third and his 58th goal of the session. Earlier in 12th minute, he missed a golden opportunity after goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz saved a penalty kick.
Madrid (30-2-4) has 94 points and a seven-point lead over Barcelona (27-3-6) with two games left. The Catalans had won the previous three titles.
“The players are all very happy after 10 months of fighting, of training, of games, the objective was to be champion so we are happy to have achieved it,” said Ronaldo. “To have beaten a team like Barca makes this league win more difficult. It’s much better to win against one of the best teams. It makes it better.”
“This was the most difficult one,” Mourinho said.
