Istanbul: The dispute between the West and Iran could only be resolved through diplomatic means and Israel’s aggressive behaviour towards Iran is wrong, said Turkish President Abdullah Gul.
“I’m one of those that believe this has to be resolved diplomatically. All these statements that Israel makes about making war – I think this are wrong,” he said in an interview with the Foreign Policy magazine.
“It is important to put oneself in their shoes and see how they perceive threats,” the president pointed out.
Turkey has already hosted two rounds of multifaceted talks between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany (P5+1), one in January 2011 and the other on April 14 this year in Istanbul.
Both Iran and the P5+1—Russia, China, France, Britain, the US and Germany—hailed the latest negotiations as constructive and agreed to hold the next round of the talks in the Iraqi capital of Baghdad on May 23, 2012.
The Islamic Republic and the P5+1 had also held another round of comprehensive talks in Geneva in December 2010.
The United States, Israel, and some of their allies accuse Tehran of pursuing military objectives in its nuclear energy programme.
Israel, which is widely believed to possess between 200 to 400 nuclear warheads, maintains a policy of deliberate ambiguity over its nuclear work, Press TV reported.
