Oslo: On the second day of his trial, the holier-than-thou Anders Behring Breivik admired al-Qaida, saying the creation of Osama bin Laden was the “most successful revolutionary force in the world”. The self-righteous killer claimed he had killed 77 people for a noble cause.
He showed no contrition when the court allowed him 65 minutes to read a personal statement.
Breivik argued that he justifiably killed 67 members of the youth wing of the ruling Norwegian Labour Party, most of them teens. They were “not innocent,” he said, but “young people who were actively working to uphold multiculturalism.” Their organization was comparable “to the Hitler Youth.”
He admired al-Qaida, saying Osama bin Laden’s creation was the “most successful revolutionary force in the world,” said Breivik, and European ultra-nationalists had much to learn from its cell structure and “cult of martyrdom.”
He revealed that his own rampage through Oslo on July 22 last year had been a “so-called suicide attack” that he hadn’t expected to survive.
If convicted, the 33-year-old would face a 21-year sentence that could be extended indefinitely if he is still considered a threat to society. If proven abnormal he would face closed psychiatric care, possibly for life.
