Karachi: The Pharma Bureau has expressed extreme concern about the current tragedy unfolding at PIC Lahore. Even though none of our members’ products are implicated in the deaths our members have proactively been in touch with the authorities to assist in any way the ongoing investigation.
Here the Pharma Bureau would like to caution the public into reaching extreme conclusions based on events which are still not conclusive and the investigation of which is still in its early stages. The issues at hand are complex and early conclusions cannot be drawn without full investigation of facts.
The Pharma Bureau has urged the government to immediately form an independent central DRUG REGULATORY AUTHORITY (DRA) adopting similar refined model employed in other nations to oversee this very critical industry of Pakistan. An independent DRA is the urgent need to ensure patient welfare and safety and to rebuild confidence of the public in the pharmaceutical industry.
The Pharma Bureau would urge the relevant authorities to expedite the investigation into this tragedy so that rectification steps can be put in place immediately.
The Pharma Bureau also offers to extend any support that is needed by the investigating authorities to ensure that this kind of event does not recur in the future.
In this regard the Pharma Bureau would again like to highlight a major concern of the industry namely the lack of a central regulating authority in Pakistan since the devolution of the Ministry of Health post-18th Amendment.
