Islamabad: The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) on Friday produced Khurram Rasool, ex media coordinator of Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, before the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a fraud case.
A three member bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was hearing the case. The SC, during last hearing, had ordered his arrest. Rasool was brought handcuffed to the court to record his statement.
Rasool said he had surrendered himself to FIA as he had confidence in courts. He said he and his family were being threatened and insulted. My children have not been going to school for a year.
He said he was told that prime minister would also be lifted. “I wished i should commit suicide after hearing insulted remarks about my mother by some elements,” Rasool added. He conceded he had been a media coordinator to Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani. However, the prime minister had nothing to do with the case.
The CJ said the case has become very high profile due to name being taken during the hearing. The court reprimanded the FIA for producing Rasool in handcuffs. He remarked that the FIA had failed to arrest Khurram Rasool for a year.
After the hearing the SC passed an order, ruling that the FIA had failed to arrest the accused despite court orders since March 2010. It said how come banking court approved his bail. It said the matter should be placed before the NAB court.
The hearing was adjourned till Feb 10.
Mr Rasool has been convicted in the banking fraud case and Rawalpindi.
Accountability Court had sentenced Khurram Rasool to three years in jail.
Khurram said on Thursday that he had been receiving life threats, therefore he went on missing. He said that his family was also facing threats and his children could not attend schools for one year.
Khurram Rasool said that he was forced to signed cheques. He showed confidence over judiciary and hoped justice.
