Melbourne: Defending champion Kim Clijsters expelled top seed Caroline Wozniacki and the result might ended her control in world number one with a straight-sets win in the Australian Open quarter-finals on Tuesday.
The 21-year-old Dane first became No. 1 in October 2010 at the China Open in Beijing and she has occupied the top spot all through, except for one week last February when Clijsters briefly took over.
Clijsters held off a determined fightback from the 21-year-old Dane to win 6-3, 7-6 (7/4) in 1hr 45min and set up a semi-final against third seed Victoria Azarenka, who beat Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska.
By failing to progress, Wozniacki is guaranteed to lose her number one ranking to Azarenka, Petra Kvitova or Maria Sharapova when the new standings are released next Monday.
