Islamabad: A resolution seeking to give Urdu the status official language of Pakistan was presented in the upper house of Pakistan’s Parliament here on Monday.
Senate, which met here with its chairman Farooq H Naek in the chair, initiated debate over the resolution tabled by Senator Prof. Khurshid Ahmed of Jamat-e-Islami. During debate on the resolution, Senators from across the political aisle in the house demanded of the government to give Urdu the status of complete official language of the country.
Prfo. Khurshid opined that hardly five percent of the population of the country understand English. The senators stated that as per the constitution Urdu should have been given the status of official language long ago, but lamented that the constitutional provisions regarding official language were not implemented by the successive governments.
