Srinagar: After recent heavy snowfall, authorities have issued avalanche alert and asked people living near Line of Control (LoC) and upper reaches of Kashmir to avoid movement during snowfall.
“On the basis of information received from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), a medium danger avalanche warning has been issued for upper reaches in Kashmir,” Coordinator Disaster Management Cell, Kashmir Aamir Ali said.
He said the avalanche prone areas are upper reaches of Islamabad, Pulwama,Shopian, Kulgam in South Kashmir, Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora in North Kashmir, Machil, Tangdhar, Keran Gurez near Line of Control (LoC) and Kargil, Keran and Drass in mountainous Ladakh region.
He advised people living in the avalanche prone areas to avoid movement during snowfall and not to venture on steep slopes and close to avalanche prone areas during next 24 hours.
Meanwhile, Kashmir continues to be under the grip of intense cold and below freezing temperature.
A Weather department official said minimum temperature in skiing resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir was recorded as – 16.2 degrees Celsius.
He said the minimum temperature in south Kashmir’s Pahalgam tourist resort was – 11.4 degrees Celsius.
“Qazigund in South Kashmir recorded a minimum temperature of – 4.8 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town recorded a low of – 4.2 degrees Celsius,” he said.

Meanwhile, water supply in some areas of Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir remained affected as extremely chilling weather froze the supply pipes. Due to the chilling cold, parts of world famous Dal Lake in Srinagar were frozen and boatmen faced tough time while rowing their boats in the Dal waters.
