Karachi: The international price (Saudi Armco Contract Price) of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has jumped by $ 87 to $ 892 per ton for January 2012, raising its import price by Rs 11,331 to Rs 92,190 per ton in the country.
This was stated by the chairman of FPCCI Standing Committee on LPG and All Pakistan LPG Distributors Association (APLDA) Abdul Hadi Khan here Tuesday.
He said that domestic price of LPG has increased by Rs 2 per kilo, 11.8 kilo cylinder by Rs 23 and 45.4 kg cylinder by Rs 91.
Hadi said that marketing companies had increased LPG price by Rs 10.50 per kg on January 2, 2012 and just after one day LPG producers have raised its price by another Rs 2 per kg.
He noted with concern that some vested interests were bent upon taking LPG industry to the brink of collapse.
He said that in the wake of electricity and gas crisis, LPG can be promoted as cheaper fuel which is produced locally in the price range of Rs  9,000 to Rs 10,000 per ton in the country.
Hadi pointed out that some opportunists have linked locally produced LPG to Saudi Aramco Contract Price and thus negating the image of LPG as economical fuel in the country.
Terming the recent rise in LPG prices, he said that this fuel will be out of reach of common consumers and its sale volume will be declined by another 20 to 30 percent.
He said this increase has threatened the survival of nearly 6,000
LPG distributors and is tantamount to render 500,000 rickshaws, taxis and commercial vehicles owners jobless.
Hadi said the hanging sword of 5 % levy on LPG is also threatening the stakeholder as it will further raise its prices by another Rs 12 per kg.
He said that LPG distributors’ association has convened an emergency meeting next week to chalk out a tough line of action against its rising prices. The meeting will divulge upon halting LPG load of
marketing companies and stoppage of LPG sale.
Hadi urged Petroleum Minister Dr Asim Hussain to convene a meeting of all stakeholders for devising an effective price mechanism for LPG to i) provide relief to common persons, ii) save the jobs of thousands of people iii) and help the country to come out of prevailing energy crisis.
