Srinagar: The militancy related incidents in Indian administered Kashmir dropped to all time low in 2011 with 28 civilian deaths, 31 soldier killings and 99 militant deaths reported in the year.
The police chief of Kashmir Kuldip Khoda dropped to around 190 incidents as compared to 368 cases last year.
“It was a sharp decline of 47 per cent. 2011 erased the grim memories of two decades of militancy and unfolded promise for new hope. This hope has to be sustained in times to come,” he said.
As per the police statistics, at least 159 people including 99 militants were killed this year as compared to 323 last year. “Against 41 civilians killed last year, at least 28 died this year. Similarly, against 66 soldiers killed in 2010, only 31 died this year,” it said.
Khoda said the winter capital (Jammu) witnessed 74 per cent drop in militant violence while Kashmir witnessed 33 per cent decline in violence as compared to last year. “37 militancy incidents were reported in Jammu this year while Kashmir witnessed 152,” he said.
He said the overall situation has improved considerably in Kashmir during past few years.
According to police statistics, there was a considerable drop in grenade attacks, explosions, rocket attacks and firing incidents. 21 grenade attacks took place this year as against 31 last year. The explosions witnessed a decline from 25 to 15, rocket attacks dipped from 21 to three and firing incidents from 244 to 131 this year.
It said 13 districts of Jammu and Kashmir have reported militancy incidents in a single digit while no militancy related violence incident was report in three districts.
“Budgam witnessed only 3 militancy incidents followed by 4 in Kulgam, 5 in Islamabad, 8 in Shopian, 8 in Ganderbal, 8 in Bandipora. Similarly, eight militancy cases were recorded in Kishtwar, 5 in Ramban, 6 in Doda, 4 in Poonch, 2 in Rajouri and one each in Jammu and Udhampur districts in Jammu province,” it said.
The statistics revealed that no militancy incidents took place in border districts of Reasi, Samba and Kathua in Jammu region.
