Srinagar, Dec 29: The Chief Minister of Indian administered Kashmir, Omer Abdullah on Thursday said all black laws including controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) will be removed from the region soon.
“The government was committed to revoke AFSPA from J&K. It is top priority of our government,” he told media persons on sidelines of a function at Shadipora, Sumbal in North Kashmir.
He said laws like AFSPA have served their purpose and need to be removed.
Maintaining that people needed to be given peace dividends, Omar said, “I am firm on my stand that AFSPA has to go. I am hopeful that black laws like AFSPA will go during my tenure. I will continue my fight for revocation of AFSPA”.
Since past few months, Omar has been demanding removal of AFSPA (the law that grants impunity to Indian soldiers for their acts in Kashmir) from Jammu and Kashmir.
He has been favouring removal of AFSPA from four districts of the State – two each from Jammu and Kashmir divisions.
However, Indian army and Defence ministry has been opposing such a much. They feel that Indian army will be handicapped in their fight against militancy if AFSPA is removed from the region.
All the separatist groups and some of the pro-Indian parties in Jammu and Kashmir have joined chorus to demand removal of AFSPA from the region.
