Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences celebrated World Disabled Day held today at Institute of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (IPM&R).
World Disabled Day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities by providing artificial limbs and in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.
Speaker Sindh Assembly, Nisar Ahmed Khoro, Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah, Vice Chancellor- DUHS, Professor Masood Hameed and Director-IPM&R Dr. Nabeela Soomro addressed a seminar on the World Disable Day.
Nisar Ahmed Khoro said on the occasion that there is an urgent need to provide them not only rehabilitative care but also make changes at community level to help them live as independent members of society. We appreciate the efforts of Dow University who help the disabled person of Larkana to starts full and equal life within their communities by providing 2500 artificial limb. He also announced a grant of Rs.0.4 million to Dow University for their rehabilitative care work.
 He further said that Health is that specialty which need more focus. I am happy to hear then Dow University would soon start mobile van service to rural areas for rehabilitative work.
Murad Ali Shah sharing his views on the occasion said that there is need to create awareness of every diseases including disability. He said that there is need to promote awareness of the human rights of those with disabilities to lead a full and equal life within their communities. He stressed on ensuring preventive steps in order to stop the diseases initially.
Prof. Masood Hameed Khan said that there is a huge burden of diseases in Pakistan. Any government alone cannot fund huge burden of diseases therefore there is need to start preventive strategy. Media role in this regard is very important. Dow University thanked the government of Sindh for sanctioning the projects of DUHS for purchasing of equipments.
Dr. Nabeela Soomro in her welcome address said that it is the first ever institute of its kind in Pakistan. It provides comprehensive multi-disciplinary rehabilitation services with facilities to help patients in Cardiac Rehab, Neurological Rehab., Musculoskeletal Rehab., Pediatric Rehab, Speech and Language Rehab, for an active and healthy lifestyle of the patients. Hence patients of stroke, TIA, head & spinal injury, GB syndrome, neuropathy, Polio, IHD, CCF, CABG, Chronic arthritis, backache and frozen shoulder etc, are being benefited.
The Institute has multidisciplinary rehabilitation team, which includes Physiatrists, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Vocational Therapists, Orthotists and Prosthetists, Language and Swallowing Pathologist, Clinical Nutritionist and a Clinical Neurophysiologist, Speech therapist and special educationist. It also provides outpatient and community-based rehabilitation services in rural and urban areas of the Country.
