Islamabad: Pakistan Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has said that the Government regards the protection of rights of minorities as its constitutional duty and is committed to their welfare.
Addressing a function held in Pakistan’s capital, Islamabad on Tuesday as part of Christmas celebrations, he said the 1973 constitution guarantees complete religious freedom, social justice and equality of rights to minorities.
He paid tributes to the Pakistani Christian community for its valuable contribution and services towards national development. He said they have representation in all spheres of life and are equal partners in the national development.
Prime Minister said the government has formulated policies for the welfare and well being of minority communities in Pakistan.
Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani said minorities are his constituency. They enjoy reserves representation in the National Assembly and the Senate of Pakistan. The implementation of five percent job quota is also being ensured in all the federal jobs for minorities in addition to the participation in open merit.
He pointed out that the present democratic government declared 11th August as National Day of the Minorities which is aimed at acknowledging contributions and achievements of the minorities for the development of the country. The democratic government has also introduced many development projects for the welfare of the minorities which will bring positive change in their lives.
He instructed the district administrations to arrange Christmas Bazar this year.
The Prime Minister also directed the Capital Development Authority to expedite the process of upgradation and development of Katchi Abadis particularly Christian dwellings in Islamabad. He also directed the authorities concerned to ensure observance of quota fixed for minorities in recruitment process.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for inter-faith harmony to defeat extremist mindset. He said all religions preach peace and harmony.
