Srinagar: A day after militants made an abortive bid on the life of a senior minister in Indian administered Kashmir, the security apparatus across the region has been tightened while militant outfit Jamiat-ul-Mujahideen has claimed responsibility of the attack and warned of more such attacks.
A senior police official said after yesterday’s attack on Law and Parliamentary affairs minister Ali Mohammad Sagar in downtown Srinagar, the security in Srinagar, the summer capital of Kashmir and other parts of the region have been beefed up.
The strength of police and paramilitary men has been increased in Srinagar and other sensitive places in Kashmir. The police and paramilitary personnel were seen conducting random frisking of passersby at several places in Srinagar. The cops were also seen stopping vehicles at some places in Srinagar and conducting searches of the vehicles. They were also thoroughly screening the documents and identity card of the travelers.
“We will also beef up evening patrols. The police and paramilitary personnel will jointly conduct night patrols at the sensitive places in Srinagar,” the official said.
Meanwhile, a wire news agency PTI, reported that militant outfit Jamiatul Mujahideen today claimed responsibility for the attack on minister.
“The Al Jabbar squad carried out the attack on Sagar last night. The attack was carried out as a reaction to the shameful statement of ruling National Conference president and Indian minister Farooq Abdullah for reopening of cinema halls and liquor shops in Kashmir,” Jamil Ahmad, spokesman of Jamiat, said in a faxed statement to PTI.
He warned of attacks in future on NC and other “pro-India” parties in Kashmir.
It is pertinent to mention here that militants carried out an attack on Law and parliamentary affairs Ali Mohammad Sagar in Nawab Bazar area of old city last evening. While the minister escaped unhurt in the attack, his security guard was killed and three others including a civilian were injured.
The minister had gone to the area to attend a family function.
