Karachi: Bandits have looted millions of rupees from different banks of Karachi in the first eleven months of current year as the police have failed to control the crime.
Bandits have also got familiar with sophisticated technology as they take away the footage of the close-circuit television cameras (CCTV) and the digital video recorders (DVR) installed at banks.
According to the data compiled by our correspondents, about Rs10 million rupees has been looted so far in 2011 in different bank heists at Liaquatabad, Baldia and Azam Basti.
In the moth of August alone, Rs1.3 million was taken away from Gulberg, Rs3.6 million from Orangi and Rs4.4 million from North Nazimabad. Armed robbers took away Rs 6 million in October from several banks in Rizwiya and Rs 4.4 million from Nazimabad.
While talking about police’s failure, SSP Special Investigation Unit (SIU) Raja Umer Khattab said that untrained security guards, non-availability of CCTV footage, failure of alarm systems are the big hurdles in the arrest of the culprits. He said that often bank security guards are themselves involved in the robberies.
Bandits’ victims and bank officials reject police claims, saying that the police have failed to capture the robbers despite getting footage. They said that security personnel don’t reach the spot on time despite being informed about the incident.
