Karachi: The people of Karachi who play a n important role in keeping the wheel of country’s economy moving, have been left at the mercy of transport mafia.
The transport mafia which has always been keen to raise fares on the pretext of hike in petroleum prices is looting the Karachiites by charging them excessive fares despite they have switched their vehicles to CNG from diesel.
Commuters on Wednesday found no place even on roof-tops of the buses to reach their work places as the Sui Southern Gas Company suspended gas supply to the city’s over 250 CNG stations as part of gas load management plan.
The transporters didn’t bring 90 percent of buses on roads as they considered 10 percent will be enough to suck the remaining blood of people, who can do nothing but to hurl abuses at each other to find even a place on the rooftops of the buses.
The people have to suffer till Thursday night and their anger will definitely be on the peak as there will be less than 2 percent transport on Thursday on the roads of Karachi, home to at least 20 million people and commercial hub of the nuclear armed nation.
Law and order situation in Karachi, which was marred by the callous target killers during the recent past, now seems to be more deteriorating as the CNG closure will result in agitation.
The transporters are not bothered on how the people are suffering; rather they have become selfish to the extent that they are issuing warning to the government of launching protest.
People are often found complaining that dacoits and mobile snatchers deprive the passengers of their valuables and at the same time conductors climb on the roof while the driver is duly respected by the looters.
People say the looters have tacit approval of the transporters to harass the passengers and deprive them of mobile phones and other valuables.
The bus owners are considered to have involvement in the bus robberies and this reporter is also a witness of the fact that bus drivers and conductors are exempted from the robberies.
If the government turns a blind eye to the situation it should wait for a chaos which is now knocking the doors.
The government should come up with a strict stance towards the transporters and should end their monopoly in the city which provide 70 percent of the total revenue of the country.
