Islamabad: President Asif Ali Zardari has requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan to take up the presidential reference, seeking revisit of death sentence to former prime minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto handed down by the apex court as the ‘martyr is calling for justice’.
A private television on Saturday reported that the president had sent a letter to Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to take up the case, which was adjourned in June this year.
An SC bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had put off the hearing of the case as some judges were retired in June this year.
The SC had remarked that there was no question of law in the reference. At some point, the CJ had also remarked that the apex court might refer the case to a trial court.
