Dow University to start ‘Diploma in Health Journalism’ soon

Karachi: Dow University of Health Sciences (DUHS) has announced to start ‘Diploma in Health Journalism’ . Which has the moto to increase capacity building for the journalists.

In a ceremony of Certificate Distribution Certificates of First Introductory Short Course for Health Journalists today at Arag Auditorium of Dow Medical College, Karachi. Vice Chancellor of Dow University, Professor Masood Hameed, Provincial Health Secretary, Pro-Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammad Umer Farooq General Secretary of Karachi Press Club and President of Association of Health Sciences were presented at the occasion.

Vice Chancellor Masood Hameed has said that the university will start hybrid classes in which teachers and students will not be bound to appear in one class.

He announced that DUHS would give computer and technical training to the children of health journalists which would help them in building their future career.

He further said that the university will also start ‘Distance Learning Classes’ under the social responsibility program.

Secretary Health, Syed Hashim Raza Zaidi in his address congratulated the participants of the Course. He appreciated the activities of Dow University and said that the new diploma is one the latest example of the efforts regarding to promote the learning qualities of journalists.

Giving the welcome address on the occasion, Prof. M. Umer Farooq, Pro-Vice Chancellor, DUHS &Princip-DMC said that health reporting is not an easy job and media has to play its role by creating awareness among the masses.

He said that raising the quality of public health and medical reporting is one of the aims of this course along with developing a deeper understanding of health sciences in the journalists who will also develop the skills to quickly identify the great uncovered stories in public health properly analyze and accurately report the important health issues.

Secretary General, Karachi Press Club has said during the occasion that the program for the journalists will create positive impact on the society and he hoped that the program will be continued in the future.

Organizers said that procedure of registration has been started and will continue till November 30. They further announced that around 30 to 35 applications will be accepted for the course.

President of Association of Health Journalist, Tufail Ahmed has said that DUHS has introduced this course for the first time in Pakistan which has to purpose to enhance their professional skills to report on health issues. This effort will later benefit general public in creating awareness and giving them scientific evidence based news through media.

20 participats got the certificates from the VC of Dow University. One of the participant and freelance journalist Rehan told The News Tribe that the course provided the new terminologies to the journalists, normally the health reporters were unaware of the information.

According to Dow University, credit hours of the first journalism course was 32 hours and announced the 3 month time for the second course.
