Islamabad: The parliamentary committee on judges appointment has approved names of 10 judges for appointment in the superior judiciary out of 11 recommended by the Judicial Commission.
The committee met under the chairmanship of Nayyar Hussain Bokhari on Thursday. Talking to media after the meeting Bokhari told that the PC unanimously approved the names of 10 judges.
He said that the committee approved elevation of Lahore High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Chaudhry, Peshawar High Court Chief Justice Ejaz Afzal and Justice Gulazr Alam in the Supreme Court. He added that names of Justices Dost Muhammad and Sheikh Azmat Saeed had been approved as Chief Justices of the Peshawar High Court and the Lahore High court respectively.
Bokahri said that the committee could not evolve consensus on Justice Athar Saeed’s appointment.
Procedure of judges appointment has been changed after the passage of i8th amendment to the Constitution. According to the procedure, a judicial commission headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan recommends names for the appointments in the superior judiciary while a bipartisan parliamentary committee approves or disapproves the names recommended by the JC.
