Islamabad: Chief Justice of Pakistan Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has said that the court will not allow selling national assets and the railways corruption case would be sent to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).
During the hearing of railways pensioners’ suo motu case, the CJ remarked that we have closely monitored FIA and now the railways corruption cases would be a test of the newly-appointed NAB chief’s credibility.
Attorney General of Pakistan Maulvi Anwar-ul-Haq told the court that auditor’s report has found Rs500 million corruption in selling of scrap.
The CJ said that he would direct the NAB chairman to investigate corruption in railways and the corrupt officials could be sent to jail if found guilty.
The apex court also accepted application of former chairman Pakistan Railways (PR) Sheikh Rahseed to become party in the case.
The railways officials presented a report regarding the restoration of the department. The report said the railways restoration needs Rs28 billion. The court expressed dissatisfaction over the report, saying with this kind of amount a new railways department could be established.
The PR chairman accepted before the court that there was some violation of rules in buying of 75 locomotives.
The court adjourned the hearing till November 23.
