Islamabad: The National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting has asked Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority to devise a strategy to undertake defaulters in the media and amend rules which safeguard such elements.
The decision was made at a meeting of the Committee chaired by its Chairperson Belum Hasnain‚ Member National Assembly. It was also decided to call the PEMRA officials in the next meeting of the committee to present their view.
During the meeting committee was informed that there were certain flaws in the PEMRA rules to undertake the defaulters in the media. The committee agreed that PEMRA should change those rules which provided security to defaulters.
Chairperson of the committee Belum Hasnain showed resentment that why PEMRA awards licenses to those who do not have good status in the media.
During the meeting Secretary Ministry of information and broadcasting told the committee that ATV had not paid Rs 25million to the PTV and a case was under progress in the Supreme Court of Pakistan in this regard.
He said that PTV had assured the SC that the PTV will accommodate all the employees of the ATV but no progress has been made so far.
Secretary Information and Broadcasting further told the committee that all the FM radio stations were broadcasting their transmissions well and all these stations were running on credit.
Committee strictly asked the secretary to take immediate steps to correct the dialect and language errors from the talk shows and news bulletins.
During the meeting, Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Firdous Ashiq Awan said that PEMRA should take strict action against the violators of code of conduct devised by the authority.
She said that the next meeting of the committee should be held in headquarter of PEMRA and a combine strategy should be devises to control illegal channels operating in the country.
