Pristina: At least eight NATO soldiers have received wounds while trying to disperse ethnic Serb protesters and remove their blockades in northern Kosovo near a disputed border crossing with Serbia.
The NATO troops used tear gas to disperse around 100 angry protesters on Thursday, as they tried to remove Serb roadblocks in the volatile northern Kosovo, BBC reported.
For nearly three months, Kosovo Serbs have been setting up road blocks to stop the country’s ethnic Albanian leadership from extending its control over a little portion of the country that is populated mostly by ethnic Serbs.
“We will stay here, we’re not thinking about leaving. We are protesting peacefully, we will not attack anyone,” AFP quoted a protester as saying.
The NATO move came after Wednesday talks with Serb leaders in northern Kosovo failed to produce a deal over the barricades.
Around 40,000 Serbs live in northern Kosovo, making up the majority in a number of towns.
The Serbs reject Kosovo’s 2008 declaration of independence from Serbia and consider the region a part of the larger Serbian nation.
