Chilas: Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani on Tuesday laid foundation stone of Diamir Bhasha dam that would generate 4500MW and store over eight million acre feet of water.
According to details, the reservoir would produce 19 billion units of electricity annually and enhance life of Tarbela Dam by over 35 years.The project would cost up to $12 billion.
The dam is being built about 40 kilometres from Chilas on the Indus River and will have a capacity of producing 4,500 megawatts of electricity.
Speaking on the occasion, Gilani said that had the dam been built earlier woes of people of Gilgit Baltistan would have been addressed. He added that the politicians played politics in the name of Kalabagh dam in the past.
He praised the local people for their sacrifices with regard to the project. He said that there was complete consensus over construction of the dam in the country.
Gilani was accompanied by Defence Minister Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar, Governor Gilgit Baltistan Pir Karam Ali Shah, Chief Minister GB Mehdi Shah, Minister for Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, Minister for Information Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Minister for Water and Power Syed Naveed Qamar and Governor Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Barrister Masood Kauser and Chief Minister Amir Haider Khan Hoti.
