Kuwaiti City: Kuwaiti Prime Minister Sheikh Nasser Mohammad al-Ahmad Al-Sabah has resigned following the months long campaign for his removal.
It was not immediately clear why the 71-year old Sheikh Nasser, a senior member of the Al-Sabah ruling family and a nephew of the emir, quit his position.
The prime minister has been under constant political pressure since he became prime minister in 2006. Since then, the cabinet has resigned five times and the country’s emir has dissolved parliament three times.
Al-Sabah faced two votes of no-confidence in parliament in 2011.
Over the past few months, Kuwaitis have been demanding the resignation of the prime minister and the government over an alleged corruption scandal involving several lawmakers.
The opposition has also been campaigning for the removal of Nasser.
Earlier this month, nearly 3,000 Kuwaitis took to the streets in the capital, calling for decisive action against the country’s corrupt legislators. They demanded the government to quit over the scam.
