Karachi: More than 600 stations of compressed natural gas (CNG) in Sindh and Balochistan were shut late Saturday evening owing to annual maintenance of Zamzama Gas Field, from where the gas is supplied to the two provinces.
A representative of CNG stations association said the stations were shut after talks with Sui Southern Gas Company. The stations will remain shut for two days.
The stations were to shut at 12 midnight, but several stations closed earlier than that, putting a lot of people in trouble.
Pakistan’s gas reserves have been depleting for many years. Any disruption in supply causes shortage in many areas.
Gas shortage has also been hurting industrial production of the country.
There has not been any major gas discovery in the country for many years. The government is considering giving incentives to investors to explore gas reserves in the country. It has also designed a new policy to induce investors to go for shale and tight gas reserves in the country.
