London: UK Defence Secretary Liam Fox resigned on Friday following criticism over his close friendship with a businessman with defence-related interests, the Ministry of Defence said.
A stream of news stories about Fox and his former flat-mate Adam Werritty, who met frequently with Fox and falsely identified himself as his adviser, had eroded Fox’s credibility ahead of an inquiry into the affair, due to be published within days.
His resignation is the biggest ministerial scalp since Liberal Democrat Cabinet minister David Laws quit after a scandal about his expenses claims last year, British papers said.
Dr Fox is likely to be replaced by transport secretary Philip Hammond, Whitehall sources said.
