Papua New Guinea: A plane carrying 32 people has crashed on the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, killing at least 28 passengers.
The four survivors have received severe injuries.
The DHC-8-100 series aircraft went down on Wednesday evening as it was flying from Lae, located 335 kilometers (208 miles) north of the capital Port Moresby, to Madang on the South Pacific island nation’s north coast, Accident Investigation Commission spokesman Sid O’Toole said, Associated Press reported on Thursday.
The spokesman said that the twin-propeller plane operated by Airlines PNG crashed 12 miles (20 kilometers) south of Madang.
“All I can tell you is that there have been reports of survivors and reports there have been fatalities,” he said.
Locals told the government-owned National Broadcasting Commission that there were only four survivors.
O’Toole noted that police and ambulances have reached the crash site, and investigators would travel there on Friday.
The plane was on a scheduled flight, and most of the passengers were reportedly parents travelling to a university graduation ceremony planned to be held in Madang this weekend.
Residents in Madang said there was a violent storm in the area at the time of the crash.
