KARACHI: Test cricketer Shahid Afridi is likely to withdraw his decision to retire from international cricket on Wednesday, one of his friends told The News Tribe correspondent.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity, he said the flamboyant all rounder would announce his comeback in a press conference to be held at his residence in Karachi.
A source in the Pakistan Cricket Board claimed that if Shahid Afidi returned to international cricket, he would be part of the one day Squad against Sri Lanka in UAE. The selection committee is keen to pick him, he said. Afridi might meet the new chairman of PCB Zaka Ashraf this week, he added.
Shahid Afridi announced his retirement on May 30 this year, protesting against coach Waqar Younis’ dictatorial attitude in team selection during the tour to West Indies. Younis himself left the job after the tour to Zimbabwe.
Differences with outgoing PCB chairman Ijaz Butt were also among the reasons for the retirement. Afridi had said that he would not return to cricket “with the current board”.
He has played 27 test, 325 one day and 43 T20 international matches for Pakistan.
It is not clear if he plans to return to test cricket as well. He retired from test cricket after the first test against Australia in England last year.
