Rawalpindi: An anti-terrorism court on Saturday handed down death sentence to Malik Mumtaz Qadri, assassin of former Punjab governor Salman Taseer .
According to reports, ATC judge Pervez Ali Shah awarded two times death sentence and fine up to Rs 200,000 under section 302 and 7 of the anti-terrorism act, to Malik Mumtaz Hussain Qadri , a resident of Rawalpindi and former elite police commando who assassinated Salman Tasseer on May, 4, 2011 in Islamabad. Taseer, a senior leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) had received 27 bullets in his body.
Strict security measures were taken as large number of Qadri’s supporters, including leaders of Sunni Tehreek (ST) were present outside the court, holding posters of Qadri and chanting slogans .
The hearing was conducted in Adiala Jail Rawalpindi where the judge ruled that no man could be given license to kill people.
Qadri confessed before the court that he killed former Punjab governor due to his blasphemous statements.
He said that Taseer was Wajibul Qatal (liable to death). The court had recorded statements of 14 witness during the hearing.
According to media reports lawyers of Qadri will filed application against the ATC verdict in the Lahore High Court.
