Karachi: Derogatory American assertions have united the whole nation, and a bold reaction could rather boost confidence of business and investment in the country.
A number of economists answered Onlineās questions in an aggressive manner recommending for the government to shrug off docile posture, and take a firm stand against the imperial arrogance of the Americans. āThis would rather boost confidence of our investors and business community,ā all of them shared this opinion.
Admiral Mike Mullenās warning to Pakistan about the latterās alleged connection with Haqqani network has created quite a ripple in Pakistan. First the military high command and then the civilian government has vehemently denied the allegations and apparently it seems remarks have genuinely ruffled Pakistan and there might be some after effects to the accusation.
Economists, Sociologists and educationists have reacted to the comments made by Admiral Mullen who is the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, US Armed Forces and thus represents the viewpoint of the Pentagon and ultimately the US government.
Prime Minister Gilani has called most of the leaders of the political parties and all of them have supported him and condemned the US cowboy that is trying to salvage its honour lost in Iraq and Afghanistan by bullying Pakistan.
Both civilian and military leadership of Pakistan expressed grave concern over US baseless allegations and made it clear that Pakistan would not tolerate such attitude in future.
Dean Faculty of Management and Administrative Sciences Dr Abuzar Wajdi termed the statement by Mullen as direct attack on the honour and sovereignty of Pakistan. āIt is too much. US appear crossing the limits of decency and diplomatic norms. This is a humiliation not to the government or the Army; it is an affront to our status as a free country. Yes, we need US for aid but US needs us too. We have sacrificed our people, security of the country is compromised and our economy is in tatters because of our partnership with US and here they accuse us in such a patronizing wayā, Dr Wajdi said in an agitating voice.
Dr Wajdi expressed his anguish about the language used by Mullen saying āIt is a direct intervention in the affairs of a free nation. They donāt have right to act as our masters and think that the government and people of Pakistan are spineless. I will tell you this: the derogatory remarks by Mullen have united us. I have seen in the eyes of the teachers and the students (of the University of Karachi). They are very angry. This does not bode well for the āfriendshipā that we have with the USā, sarcasm and anger was evident from his words and the voice.
Chairman of the Department of Economics Dr Shafiqur Rahman agreed that comment by Admiral Mullen was against the norms of diplomacy and the principles of mutual respect. He was of the opinion that the market in Pakistan will react positively if the government and the army acted strongly and sent the message to US that āWe are, after all, a sovereign nation and we should not be belittled in such a mannerā. It will send assuring message to the share markets and they could jump upwards. The opposite will happen if our rulers showed their customary weakness and lack of political visionā, he said curtly.
