Islamabad: Shrugging off the US pressure turning into threats to do more in war on terror, Pakistan started weighing its options including suspension of NATO supply route on security pretext.
Besides unequivocal reactions to the threatening American statements by Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar in America and Chief of Army Staff General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani in Rawalpindi, the government high ups on Friday contemplated on the country’s options in case the sole super power goes any further in arm twisting.
According to sources suspension of NATO supply transit could be the very first option with Pakistan if at all it has to return to the US the coin.
The US Secretary of Defence Leon Panetta as well as military chief Mike Mullen made allegations against Pakistan respectively meetings with Hina Rabbani Khar and Ashfaq Pervez Kayani.
Sources told Online news agency on Friday that ties between the two allied countries were heading towards heightened tension after US had leveled allegations against Pakistan.
Pakistan has decided to give response following the statements made by US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen for involving Pakistan in aiding insurgents to attack American embassy in Kabul and by US defence secretary for conducting unilateral action against militants inside Pakistan territory.
The sources told grave charges brought by top US authorities against Pakistan have been viewed very surprising by Pakistan senior political and military leadership. Pakistan had rendered sacrifices in war against terrorism more than any other country and US is giving reward to Pakistan in the shape of accusations.
Sources further disclosed Pakistan had started considering suspending supply line to NATO in the face of security concerns after the charges have been leveled. However final decision is expected soon.
Sources confirmed that Pakistan had other options as well which were being considered. However they avoided to drop any hint about these options.
It may be recalled that transportation of 70 percent supply of goods to NATO takes place through Pakistan. NATO and US troops can face immense difficulties in the event of disconnection of supply line.
Earlier Pakistan had decided to suspend NATO supply line for security reasons following May, 2 incident and the decision was taken back after US senator John Kerry visit to Pakistan.
