New Delhi: A woman in Manipur has been on hunger strike for the last eleven years against excesses committed by Indian security forces. She is given food forcibly through a tube inserted in her nose. In recent months, Anna Hazare, a 72-year-old man has become very popular due to his hunger strike against corruption in the Indian system of government.
He became popular thanks to extensive coverage given by media.
But Sharmila hasn’t got that much coverage during last eleven years. She has been demanding that draconian laws that are applied in the state be annulled and security forces be withdrawn.
She says she hasn’t weakened over the years and still awaits justice.
Security forces can arrest or shoot anybody in the state, powers that have been given to them to crush separatist movements. Human rights groups say thousands have been murdered and tortured under these laws and no action has ever been taken against security forces.
