Tripoli: The spokesman for the Libyan fugitive ruler Muammar Gaddafi has said that Gaddafi is still in his homeland, denying reports about a convoy of army vehicles that have reportedly crossed into Niger.
“He (Gaddafi) is in Libya. He is safe, he is very healthy, in high morale. He thinks very much that he is doing exactly what he should be doing,” Gaddafi’s spokesman Moussa Ibrahim said.
“He knows that he is supported by millions, not just in Libya but actually around the Arab world.”
Earlier, military sources from France and Niger said a convoy of 200 to 250 army vehicles, escorted by the army of Niger, crossed into Libya’s landlocked neighbor.
A French military source said that the convoy may be joined by Gaddafi himself who might be planning to seek refuge in the adjacent country of Burkina Faso that has reportedly offered asylum to the fugitive ruler.
The United States said it believed the convoy was carrying senior members of the Gaddafi regime, but not the dictator himself.
Niger government has denied that dozens of cars have entered the country but confirmed that Gaddafi’s security chief Mansour Dhao and his family have been allowed to cross the border into Niger after several days of negotiations.
