Tripoli: Head of Libya’s Transitional National Council (TNC) Mustafa Abdel Jalil has set four-day as the final deadline for forces loyal to fugitive Libyan ruler Muammar Gaddafi to surrender. He set Saturday as the final deadline for the forces loyal to Gaddafi.
He on Tuesday said the negotiations were underway with tribal elders to arrange the peaceful surrender of the areas still held by pro-Gaddafi remnants.
Such areas include Gaddafi’s hometown of Sirte, the district of Bani Walid southeast of Tripoli and the southern areas of Libya.
The rebels’ deadline affects Gaddafi’s Sirte hometown, the district of Bani Walid southeast of Tripoli and the southern areas.
“This window of opportunity will be closed at the end of Eid-ul-Fitr (Friday in Libya),” AFP quoted Jalil as saying.
Jalil said the TNC was open to “all initiatives that could lead to a peaceful solution,” adding that he hoped “the use of force will not be necessary.”
Opposition fighters have reached within 30 kilometers of Sirte on the west and have pushed seven kilometers past the village of Bin Jawad, which lies 62 kilometers from the last bastion of the fugitive ruler.
NATO warplanes have bombarded Sirte over the past few days, targeting dozens of military vehicles and military targets and shelters.
Meanwhile, Libyan rebels on Monday have claimed to kill Gaddafi’s son Khamis in a battle near Libya’s capital Tripoli and buried in the western city of Ziltan.
Oppositon fighters want to capture the country’s fugitive dictator and his associates so they can proclaim final victory in the six-month-old uprising.
