“Oho! What the hell! You are always among books. Forget them for a while. Let’s go. Saira is giving us a treat.”
“So what if you didn’t make it to MBA. Master’s in English is a good option, too.”
“We will go to see a movie on saturday. Don’t go to university. Come to that restaurant. We will meet there.”
Students often get to hear such pieces of advice and plans from their friends. Of course
they are friends. One remembers all these things when one has grown up and has many
responsibilities. But are all our friends are our well wishers too? This needs to be
examined.
The News Tribe conducted a survey, asking students questions about their friends. Students
told us about the types of friends. Let’s share the knowledge with you.
There are some on the campus, who give you company, but nothing else. They indulge in gossip, which you enjoy sometimes, but not always. Girls of this type talk about TV
programmes and boys of this type talk about girls or sports events. Neither do they study
themselves nor do they allow you to think of studies when they are with you. They disappear
when you are in need of help and reappear only when you are free of worries. Boys like
friends of this kind, but girls don’t.
There are some friends which befriend you only for certain ends. When they get what they
want, they give you little attention. Sometimes they need you to get closer to a teacher. At
other times they need you to get closer to some other student. For example, a boy may
befriend a girl only to get closer to another girl whom he likes.
There are many friends that are bound together by groups. They are always helpful to each
other. They share not just the joys. They also share the worries and pains you go through.
These friends help each other in notes preparation, finding books and readying assingments.
These are the friends that help you get good grades and indirectly help you become a
successful professional. These are the real friends.
A girl of economics department told The News Tribe that one meets a large number of fellow
students at the university, talk to them, eat with them, laugh with them. “But all are not
friends. Friends are only a few that remain with you throughout the student life and in
practical life as well.”
Raheel, a student of IBA, said the friendships of student life are much useful in practical life because it is the “contacts” that make anybody progress in life.
Mushfiq Ahmad, a former student of political science department, said that friendship is not something permanent and that even the most intimate friends usually do not see each other once they complete their education. “I had friends in school. Now I don’t know where they are. I had friends in college. I don’t know where they are. Similarly, I know nothing about many of my university friends. Even those of them that are in the same profession are rarely met with.”
He advises students not to expect much from friendships made in the school, college or university days. “After five or six years, the ‘intimate friends’ do not remember each other even in months.”
