Do you know what has been the greatest product of the University of Karachi? It is Dr A Q Khan, the man who gave Pakistan nuclear power. He did his BSc from the University of Karachi in 1960. He has been awarded 63 gold medals by various organizations. Blocks in several educational institutions have been named after him.
The university, founded in 1951, has produced a large number of prominent scientists, educationists, social scientists, thinkers, poets and writers who served the country selflessly and tirelessly.
Hussain Haqqani, a widely known name among the diplomatic community of the world, who is currently Pakistan’s ambassador to the United States, did his master’s in international relations from the University of Karachi. He was active in student politics and remained the president of the students union.
Hussain Haroon, the permanent representative of Pakistan in the United Nations, completed his education from the university.
Prof Dr Ataur Rehman, the former chairman of Higher Education Commission, did his MSc from the university. He has received many awards from the government for his services to the country.
Rashid Minhas, the man who laid down his life while fighting Indian hijackers, was also educated at the Karachi University. He received instruction in military history and air force history from the university.
The current vice chancellor of the university Prof Pirzada Qasim also did his BSc from the university. He has been in teaching for the last 37 years and has published dozens of research papers besides his poetry.
Ajmal Mian, former chief justice of Pakistan, got his degree in political science from the Karachi University.
Saeeduz Zaman Siddiqui, who gained fame by refusing to take oath under General Musharraf’s PCO in 1999, did his LLB from the university in 1960.
Mufti Taqi Usmani, the most respected living scholar living in the country, who pioneered Islamic banking in the country, also received his law degree from the Karachi University.
Many prominent journalists of the country also received their education in this university including recently martyred Saleem Shehzad and Wali Khan Baber. Najeeb Ahmed, who held various positions repeatedly in the Karachi Press Club, was also one of the prominent student leaders at the KU.
This university produced a large number of poets and writers. The biggest name is Ibne-Insha, who received his master’s in 1953 from here. The biggest name among women is Parveen Shakir, who got education in early ‘80s from here.
Considering the significance of these people that Karachi University produced we have no reason to be pessimistic about the future of this country. This university will continue to create men and women of talent in the decades to come
