Karachi: 300 billion rupees have been handed over to the NGOs in Pakistan without any check and balance.
This amount was given to NGOs without any check under the poverty alleviation program. It has also been found that the government has set up private companies to run the poverty alleviation program.
The news tribe has learnt that the Public Accounts Committee of National Assembly has expressed its anger for not conducting audits of the poverty alleviation and roller support programs. It has summoned a report from both these organizations. Audit officials have pointed out that the government has opened new private companies for running certain programs. Federal secretaries have been included in their boards.
Director Special committee of Public Accounts Committee has disclosed that in the past ten years 100 billon rupees in loans from the World Bank were transferred to the NGOs through the funds reserved for poverty alleviation. According to a clause of the agreement with the Financial Division no auditing was to be carried out regarding the transfer of funds to NGOs.
Public Accounts Committee taking notice of the situation has summoned a record of the programs being run through foreign funding for detailed examination. The committee was informed that these NGOs gave loans to people on 20 to 25 percent interest rates but and are not prepared to carry out an audit.
The auditor general of Pakistan has disclosed that the funds given for poverty alleviation are being spent on salaries, cattle farming and for purchasing vehicles.
In Pakistan, 110 million people of the total population of 180 million live below the poverty line. They live on an earning of one to two dollars a day. While on the other hand news of corruption by NGOs and other organizations keep pouring in. The government so far has not taken any steps.
