Karachi: Government of Sindh has announced its more than Rs 457.9 billion revenue-oriented budget on Friday for next fiscal 2011-12, with revenue expenditures totaling to around 283.14 billion.
Sindh Finance Minister Murad Ali Shah presented the budget for the fiscal year 2011-12. No new tax was added in the Sindh budget. The government is expecting a surplus of Rs882 million.
The development package for Karachi was announced to be Rs 20 billion, while Rs 10 million, Rs 20 million and Rs 2 million were allocated for Hyderabad, Larkana and Benazirabad respectively.
A new city called Zulfiqarabad will be established along coastal belt of Thatta, for which 335 acres of land were allocated.
The session was conducted in a peaceful manner. Except for the Awami National Party that announced their boycott a day earlier, all political parties attended the session.
According to the budget document, Rs31 billion was allocated for the improvement of law and order in the province.
Shah, in his budget speech said that the priority being given to the education sector can be gauged from the fact that the total budget for education including technical education has increased from Rs 22.8 billion during the outgoing year to Rs 26.2 billion for the fiscal year 2011-12- an increase of 15 percent.
It was also announced that 80,000 new teachers will be appointed in all schools in the province. 300 new schools will be built while 124 primary schools will be restored.
The minister further added that Rs 6.95 billion has been allocated for the development of the health sector.
Rs 20 billion were also allocated for flood affected areas.
