Islamabad: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan has said that the independent commission proposed in the unanimous resolution of the parliament to probe the Abbottabad incident would be set up after consultations with all the political parties and stakeholders.
“The Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly has proposed some names for the commission but there are also some other signatories of the Parliament’s resolution. The Prime Minister has started consultations with them to evolve a consensus on it,” she said while addressing a press conference here.
Dr Firdous said that the government would own the unanimous resolution regarding Abbottabad incident by setting up the independent commission.
“We are trying to find out a suitable person having an international repute, unblemished past and is acceptable to all the parties and people to head the commission,” she added.
The Minister said that the government believed in the supremacy of Parliament and was taking along all the political parities through its reconciliation policy.
All the parliamentarians, including those belonging to opposition parties have been allocated funds under the Public Service Development Programme (PSDP), she added.
Commenting on the statements of PML-N Chief Mian Nawaz Sharif, she said that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) was not afraid of such statements. The politics of clash and personal vendetta is not in the interest of the country, she added.
Dr. Fridous urged the media to help the government come out of the present difficult situation.
Responding to a query regarding price hike, she said that the restoration of magistracy system was the only remedy to this problem which was abolished with changes in local government system by the last government.
All the provinces have now been empowered and they can control the price hike after their capacity building, she added.
About Nawaz Sharif’s allegations regarding Makhdoom Amin Fahim, she said,” the matter is subjudice and instead of hurling allegations, he (Nawaz Sharif) should file a petition in the court”.
Regarding drone attacks, she said that the President and the Prime Minister have shared their concerns with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during her visit to Pakistan. Ms. Clinton was conveyed by the Prime Minister that drone attacks were not acceptable.
The Minister made it clear that national interests would not be compromised at any cost.
To another question regarding completion of Election Commission of Pakistan, she informed that a committee had been constituted in this regard.
The committee has started consultations, she said and added, “We are waiting for the names for the commission from the opposition parties.”
About the forthcoming budget, she said the government was fully aware of the problems being faced by the people and it would take measures to give relief to them.
The Minister said the government had opened diplomatic channels to improve relations with the neighbours, regional and international forces and after 30 years it had opened up an energy corridor with Russia.
She said that the lead information was given by Pakistani agencies for operation against Osama bin Laden.
