Washington: Pakistan has permitted CIA to examine the compound where al Qaeda Chief Osama bin Laden was killed, The Washington Post reported.
Pakistan allows CIA to use necessary equipment in a search for al Qaeda materials that might have been hidden inside walls or buried at the site, the report said.
The website, citing unidentified US officials, said a CIA team is expected to visit the compound in Abbottabad very soon, and that the objective is to brush the site for items that were not recovered by American commandos during the raid or Pakistani security forces who secured the facility in the aftermath.
CIA Deputy Director Michael J Morell negotiated access to the Abbottabad site during a trip to Islamabad last week, when he met with the head of Pakistan’s Intelligence-Services Intelligence (ISI), Lt. Gen. Ahmed Shuja Pasha, the Post said.
The website site said that Pakistan agreed in part because it does not have such technical equipment, and breaking through portions of the structure to conduct a search might risk destroying any materials hidden inside.
Meanwhile, State Department refused to assure the news that CIA forensic team would visit Pakistan. The State Department said that there are some 300 American Army officials in Pakistan to train Pakistani officials.
The department said that number of the US troops presence in Pakistan is being reduced over Pakistan’s wish.
