Mansehra: A tribal Jirga handed down death sentence to a young man over ‘charges of having a camera mobile phone’ and was shot dead shortly after the Jirga (decision making assembly) announced the capital punshiment on Tuesday in a village of Torghar district in northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pukhtunkha province, The News Tribe has learnt.
Sources said that having a camera mobile phone is considered a crime in the Torhgar area that was previously a part of the Provincially Administrated Tribal Area (PATA) .Though its status has been changed and it has become a settled area Jirga system is still dearer to tribal elders.
A resident of the area requesting anonymity told The News Tribe that the tribal ‘elders’ held the slain man Yaseen and found a mobile phone having a camera. He said Yaseen was shot dead on the spot where the Jirga decided his fate.
Former member national assembly from the area Zar Gul Khan told the News Tribe that the incident was into his knowledge and was bothered as to why the elements behind the killing of a innocent youth was not arrested despite the district has become a settled area form a provincially administrated tribal area.
Another resident of the area said that use of such phone was violation of Islamic laws and the local people adopted their own ways to prosecute such ‘criminals’.
Sources said that the incident occurred in the precincts of Koror police station. Senior police officer Naqibullah did not receive the phone call when contacted by The News Tribe correspondent.
A junior police officer told that they had no authenticity to lodge an FIR.
