Islamabad: United States special envoy to Afghanistan and Pakistan Marc Grossman Thursday said that Washington respected Pakistan’s sovereignty but he refused to assure that it would not repeat Abbottabad-like operation in future.
While giving interview to a private Pakistani TV channel (Geo TV), Grossman said the US recognized the sacrifices made by the military and people of Pakistan in the war. He said no Pakistani authority had ever demanded the US administration to formally sign an agreement on war against terror.
Grossman said the war on terror will go on till al Qaeda no longer has the capacity to target people worldwide.
On whether funding has a part to play in terrorism, Grossman said the terrorism in the region comes partly from the narcotics trade in Afghanistan.
Grossman arrived Islamabad on Wednesday as part of efforts to ease the tension between Washington and Islamabad after the US unilateral operation to kill al Qaeda chief deep inside Pakistan.
The US special envoy called on Pakistan’s top civil and military leadership as part of efforts to restore bilateral relations following the covert American operation in a compound in Abbottabad that killed Osama bin Laden.
