Washington: United States Defense Secretary Robert Gates said he was very concerned about intelligence report that Al Qaeda Chief Osama Bin Laden located the in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, ahead of the May 2 covert raid.
While giving an interview to CBS TV Gates said, “My worry was the level of uncertainty about whether Bin Laden was even in the compound.… There was not any direct evidence that he was there. It was all circumstantial. But it was the best — information that we had — since probably 2001.”
Gates is a veteran US government official who also once served as CIA director.
Obama has nominated CIA director Leon Panetta to replace Gates. If confirmed, Panetta is set to take over July 1.
