Washington: United States President Barack Obama is seeking a two-year extension of FBI Director Robert Mueller, White House said Thursday.
Mueller serves the seat for last 10-year and his current term expires September 4.
Obama said “Given the ongoing threats facing the US, as well as the leadership transitions at other agencies like the Defense Department and CIA, I believe continuity and stability at the FBI is essential at this time.”
Mueller “transformed the FBI after 9/11, into a pre-eminent counterterrorism agency, he has shown extraordinary leadership and effectiveness at protecting our country every day since.”
Congressional approval is required to extend Mueller’s term.
Mueller had expected to retire when his term ends in September, but Obama convinced him to stay for the additional two years, according to a senior official.
Congress set a 10-year limit for the FBI director after J. Edgar Hoover’s 48-year rule over the agency. Nobody since that time has served the full 10 years.
